Step inside the world of professional musical theatre and discover how West End performers prepare, learn and bring a song to life.


Stages Theatre Arts is delighted to welcome acclaimed actor, singer, musician and vocal coach Kurt Kansley to Cornwall for an exciting and inspiring afternoon of Music Theatre.


Currently starring as Toulouse-Lautrec in the world tour of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Kurt will share the techniques, experience and insight he has developed throughout an international career spanning some of the world’s greatest stages.


Whether you are an experienced performer, an aspiring musical-theatre student or simply someone who loves to sing, this is a unique opportunity to learn directly from a leading West End professional.



What To Expect:

During this practical and energetic two-and-a-half-hour workshop, Kurt will take participants through the processes and techniques used by professional musical-theatre performers.


Including:


Vocal warm-ups used by professional performers before stepping onto the West End stage.


Exploring how a professional performer approaches a song and repertoire.


Participants will work together to learn and rehearse a published medley of music from the spectacular hit musical Moulin Rouge! Under Kurt’s professional direction, the group will explore ensemble singing, harmony, storytelling, vocal expression, stage presence and the excitement of creating a full company sound. At the end of the afternoon, participants will bring everything together in an informal workshop performance of the material they have learned.


The session will conclude with an informal 'In Conversation with Kurt Kansley'. Participants will have the opportunity to ask Kurt about his career, professional training, auditions, vocal preparation, life backstage, working in the West End and performing in major international productions. It is a rare opportunity to hear honest advice and first-hand stories from someone actively working at the highest level of the musical-theatre industry.

  • Musical-theatre performers;

  • Members of theatre companies, choirs and amateur dramatic groups;
  • Young people considering professional training;
  • Anyone who loves musical theatre and wants to develop their voice.


You do not need to be a professional performer to take part. 

What matters most is enthusiasm, a willingness to participate and a love of singing and performance.

About Kurt Kansley

Kurt Kansley is a seasoned British and Australian actor, singer, musician, writer and musical-theatre practitioner whose career has taken him from Australia to London’s West End and stages around the world.

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Kurt emigrated to Australia with his family as a child. He went on to train in Dramatic Arts and Music at Monash University and the Melba Conservatorium in Melbourne, developing the strong theatrical and musical foundations that have supported his extensive international career.


Kurt is currently playing the celebrated role of Toulouse-Lautrec in the world tour of Moulin Rouge! The Musical.


Kurt’s impressive UK theatre career includes appearances in some of the most recognised productions and venues in British theatre. His credits include:

Kurt played Che in Evita opposite Australian musical-theatre and recording star Tina Arena at the Sydney Opera House. His performance earned him a 2019 Green Room Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.

He later received a second Green Room Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical in 2020 for his performance as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime.


Alongside his work as a performer, Kurt is an experienced writer and creator of new musical theatre. He co-writes as part of the musical-theatre writing partnership Kansley & Lidert, creating original books, music and lyrics for projects developed in the United Kingdom, United States, Singapore and Australia.

He has worked with students at leading performing-arts institutions including Arts Educational Schools London, Bird College and Italia Conti, helping developing performers strengthen their vocal technique, storytelling, musicianship and confidence. His work spans performance, vocal coaching, musical direction, writing, composing, arranging and the development of new musical theatre. Kurt’s combination of professional experience, musical expertise and generous approach to teaching makes this West End Session an exceptional opportunity for singers and performers in Cornwall.
